Default Replacing a Transmission - 02-11-2012, 11:17 PM

Hey guys.
So I'm planning to replace a transmission in my 86 but this is the first time I'm ever doing it and a first a friend of mine is doing it on any corolla. I just wanted to know if this thing on eHow is pretty much close to what we'll be doing and if there's anything thing to keep in mind while working on this...or if there are better guides out there. Kind of a learning experience for me so I'd like to read up on this before anything is done
THANKS!

Exhaust pipe(may not be necessary), Shifter & boot console whatever, drain it or duct tape some plastic over the tailshaft to keep the lube in. Clean the fork Really well & look for cracks!!!
Pressure wash first!

Also, since it's going to be out how's the starter ring gear, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, release & pilot bearings?

Also, also, trans in gear when installing so you can turn the mainshaft to align the splines into the clutch.

The only difficult bolts are the two at the top where the gearbox bolts to the engine.
Disconnect the battery as the starter will need to come out.
Whenever I replace the gearbox I cable tie the clutch release arm to stop it from
pushing the release bearing off if it gets knocked when positioning the 'box.
The engine will rock back when the gearbox is off, to make lining the gearbox up
much easier you should lift the front of the engine up a couple of inches.
You should'nt need to remove the propshaft completely, just take out the two centre
bearing support bolts and pull the shaft out.

I'm gonna have to check all that. It's kinda tough for me since I live in a dorm and not much room to really look at or through the trans.

Now I havent opened up or looked through this thing. Anything i should be careful about?

its really easy and straightforward, but the only things you want to be careful of is try to prop the engine up somehow because when you take the trans out all that is structurally holding the engine in are the two motor mounts on either side of the engine so it can twist on the motor mounts if the motor rocks forward or backwards this will also make it difficult to get the transmission socketed back on. a jack would work or some blocks of wood stacked up in front of and behind the motor mounts under the oil pan once you have the car all jacked up on stands. or even the jack would work too.

and be sure to drain the oil before you pull the drive line and replace it before you drive it and everything else is easy. the transmission is surprisingly light, Ive even done this solo a quite few times on my car.
