Default AE86 4AGE ignition problem, no spark - 02-03-2012, 05:15 AM

I got a new dizzy with good wires, but there is still no spark. I jumped the battery too. When I turn the key, there is just a click in the engine bay and nothing else.

At first I thought it's my dizzy cause I cut the wires, switched them, and then soldered them back, so I thought my soldering might be bad.

I'm not sure what the problem is...

so the starter doesn't turn at all? if so check the grounds and the starter, they tend to fail after some time - due to the connections wearing down, bearing failure etc...

Replace your starter.
And don't get a shitty schucks one. Buy a Toyota starter.

replacing the starter is overkill - they are easily rebuildable in 99% of the cases and depending how much needs to be done, only costs from 1-30 bucks

in my case I only had to replace the 2 L-shaped copper pieces (got them for free) which are mounted inside the clutch-housing where the wires mount to.
If this is the case, good tip for the future leave the back cap of the clutch-housing (3 bolts) off, when installing them to ensure proper fit, so they don't wear down prematurely.

Yes, sure replacing the contacts is an easy fix, but what about the plunger, windings, etc? I guess if you're on a tight budget, then yes. I don't like having to take things apart for things that can be easily replaced and trouble free for the next 10+ years.

Neither am I, but we're all very sure that a spark problem and a starter problem are totally unrelated. Use the factory manual for checking the dizzy, coil, ignitor and their wiring. Jump the starter's solenoid with 12V, direct from the battery is quickest to see that the starter will work when it has adequate current.
Don't mess with solenoid contacts unless you're only hearing a loud heavy mechanical 'thunk' without the starter motor turning, that's the sign of solenoid working but contacts not making the connection to the starter's motor.

Thanks a lot for the responses. Yeah after reading about starters, I'm pretty sure it's the starter cause the starter isn't even starting. Basically this problem happened after I left it untouched for 4 months.

I'm only hearing the 'thunk' from the starter when I turn the key the first 2 - 3 times. After that there isn't even that sound, just the smaller clicking sound. I'll check the connection first.

Sounds like there's a good chance your battery is dead. They tend to drain slowly over time (4 months would be plenty). Do you have a battery charger or jump box or anything like that?

Yeah I already jumped my battery, even tried a different battery from the jumping car.
